Evey 7 weeks

We found our bitch earlier in December at a kennel we really love in Europe. We are thrilled and yet realize that it's much harder this way. We have only seen pictures of our puppy. We couldn't visit the breeder or their facilities etc. But, I'm still confident. They have very beautiful dogs and are very active in the show ring. One of their males is the #1 All Breed in their country.

I have been watching kennels and breeders for over 20 years so I'm confident in our choice, however if you are new to Newfs, I strongly suggest you review our 'Finding a Puppy' Link. As a newcomer it's very important that you take the necessary steps to finding a good breeder. That page is your how to rather than below.

Everything so far has been waiting. If you are considering an out of country breeder this is your process once the breeder advises they have a puppy for you:

*Your breeder should provide you with a price that includes puppy, health checks, shots and shipping charges. Many countries use 'pet passports'. This helps the process through customs, but check your local regulations to make sure they send everything you need.

*Send funds. We make a bank to bank transfer. Unfortunately the bank made a mistake on the 1st try and we had to have them re-send the funds. It should have taken 24-72 hours (3 week days) for the transfer to go through. If it has not, have your bank check on it right away. If we had not they advised they would not have contacted us for at least two weeks.

*Have your breeder confirm receipt of your funds and request a ship date that is good for you. We chose January 2nd or 8th as the best days for us and she will ship January 8th.

*Your breeder will send you the flight information. Confirm which cargo area the pup will come into at your airport. You will need to get your documents that come with the puppy, take them to your customs area to pay fees. Once they give you the release documents you can get your puppy.

So, right now it seems like wait and then wait some more. All of these steps of waiting have been a little crazy, but it's so exciting as well. We have everything in order, know which cargo area to go to and are in the waiting for her flight stage.

Evey will ship to us at 12 weeks. Whether close to home or anywhere else your breeder shouldn't send your new puppy home until 10 weeks of age. Many will send at 8-9, however they should be having her heart checked prior to going to a new home at 10 weeks. The extra socialization is also very good for them. Never under 8 weeks.

If you have questions or comments about finding a breeder, shipping a puppy or Newfoundlands in general let us know.
